ลักษณะทั่วไป

แมลงตดBombardier Beetle เป็นแมลงปีกแข็งชนิดหนึ่งจำพวกเดียวกันกับด้วงดิน ลำตัวยาวประมาณสองเซนติเมตร กว้างประมาณห้าถึงแปดมิลลิเมตร ชนิดที่พบในประเทศไทยมีสองชนิด คือ Pherosophus javanus และ Pherosophus occipitalis โดยสารพิษของแมลงตดมีคุณสมบัติเป็นกรด    ประกอบด้วย ไฮโดรควินโนน และ ไฮโดรเจนเปอร์ออกไซด์ เมื่อเจอศัตรูคุกคาม หรือเพื่อจับเหยื่อเป็นอาหารแมลงตดจะพ่นสารพิษอันตรายนี้เข้าใส่เป้าหมาย ทำให้สัตว์ที่เป็นเป้าหมายขนาดเล็กตายได้ และเมื่อโดนผิวหนัง เช่น ผิวหนังมนุษย์จะทำให้เกิดรอยไหม้ ปวดแสบปวดร้อน หากโดนเข้าที่ดวงตาอาจทำให้ตาบอดได้(เพราะฉะนั้นเด็กๆไม่ควรไปยุ่งกับแมลงตดนะครับ ขอบอก)

ชีวิตและความเป็นอยู่

แมลงตดอาศัยอยู่บนบก ตามริมน้ำ แอ่งน้ำ ซุกซ่อนตัวอยู่ตามใบไม้ กิ่งไม้ เปลือกไม้แห้ง กินแมลงชนิดอื่นๆ รวมทั้งเพลี๊ยต่างๆเป็นอาหาร ส่วนมากวางไข่เป็นกลุ่มอยู่ตามโพรงดิน กาบไม้แห้งต่างๆ

General characteristics
